Pages by the Thames – the Literary history of Maidenhead, Marlow and Cookham

By | 24/02/2025

Back in October 2022, Heather Adams entertained us with a fascinating talk about Emma, Lady Hamilton, the consort of Admiral Horatio Nelson.  This time, she will be addressing the literary history of Maidenhead, Marlow and Cookham.  This area by the Thames has been enjoyed by great literary talent through the centuries, from Mary Shelley and Frankenstein to Enid Blyton and Noddy.  Heather’s talk will be looking at a few of these authors and exploring their history, their inspiration, and their work.  She will be joined by Diana Le Clerq and Mike Bryan for the readings.

Heather is a historian and has recently curated the special exhibition ‘Writers of Marlow from Frankenstein to Noddy’ at Marlow Museum.  This was shortlisted for the Best Exhibition Award at Bucks Sparks Awards recently.

NEW VENUE – IMPORTANT!

We shall no longer be meeting at the Desborough Bowling Club as our numbers are causing problems for their bowling members.  Instead, we shall be meeting at the Methodist church at the top of the High Street, next to the statue of the Boy and the Boat.  The nearest bus stop is Stop FA in Frascati Way, a few minutes’ walk from the church.  There are a number of car parks within a short walking distance including Odeon, Hines Meadow and West Street.  Please aim to arrive between 2.00 and 2.15pm.

Prospective or non-members who would like to attend the talk as a u3a ‘sample’ should please first contact the Chairman and Membership Secretary, Maggie Kearney, on 01628 637 160 or membership@maidenheadu3a.org.uk.

PLEASE ENSURE YOUR PHONE IS SWITCHED OFF OR SET TO SILENT.
