Since writing was invented mankind has written poems, tales and histories that describe and explore the deepest issues that affect us as societies and individuals. It is proposed to set up a group to read and discuss some of the masterpieces of the Ancient World, from Homer, through the Greek tragedians and such great Roman writers as Virgil, Ovid and Seneca, to the early Christian work of Augustine. The texts will be read in translation but, where possible, extracts in the original Greek and Latin will be made available, together with background notes on historical context and modern scholarly “readings”.
This new group will be led by Steve who has a PhD in Classics.
